The Necessary EvilsI have a question. Why is it that humans seek tragedy? Why is it that tragedy and drama grasp our attention? Why is it that we as humans find tragedy and fear at times so beautiful? It has always puzzled me from the start. Why is it that Shakespeare wrote “Romeo and Juliet”? Why is it that Edgar Allan Poe wrote “The Raven”? “Fear” and “Tragedy” are not happy ideas. They are neither meant to inspire, nor provoke actions. They are meant to oppress us. The answer would seem trivial; that a slave is a person who is subjected to a life of servitude, waiting at the heels of an ungrateful master for a command, regardless of its nature. This indeed is the stereotype, aided by the vivid depictions found in junior high school history books, as we usually come across the picture of a helpless Native African being beaten down by a burly white colonist of New England with a truncheon or whip.
Taking the noun “slave” in the modern sense, in a modern world context where slavery is almost non-existent, I believe it is safe to rede
